The Right Deck Design For Your Needs

A deck leads to better utilization of your courtyard where you can spend time with family and entertain your guests. A house with a deck on the hillside makes an enchanting view. A deck should be so designed as to compliment the design of your house and go well with the neighboring yard.

Position of the Deck

It’s important to estimate the location of your deck for maximum effect. You may have it on one side of the house or at the back of your house. Some people prefer to have a free standing deck, away from the main house. While deciding the location of the deck, one is necessarily required to take consideration of the weather. A deck that faces the north can not be expected to receive as much of sunlight as a deck that faces the South. If the deck faces the north, it will attract chilly winds during spring and fall. At the same time the limitation of a south facing deck is that it will become too hot in summers as it gets sun all through the day. If you locate the deck closer to the dining area or kitchen, you get the advantage of entertaining your friends with meals on the deck.

Overall Deck Design

The size and design of your deck is decided by your requirements. It’s quite customary to limit the size of the deck to that of the biggest room in the house or to the size of the drawing room. The position of the deck should be such that it allows easy entry and exit. Generally, people provide one opening from the deck to the house while there are two gateways for approaching the yard. If the house needs a new door for the deck, it should be installed before the deck is constructed. It’s best to go for French doors or sliding glass doors as they allow you to have a good view. Railings are essentially required for the purpose of safety, especially when you have kids at home. Having potted plants around the edges of the deck makes it attractive and gives the feeling of being close to nature. Care should be taken that the potted plants around the deck are in harmony with the plants in the neighboring garden, should there be any. You may also consider having arbors if vines are growing around to protect the deck from severe weather.

Deck for Dinners

If you intend hosting dinners on the deck, its focal point will be the tables and their layout. The size of the table is naturally decided by the number of guests you are going to accommodate there. A stylish bistro table should suffice if you expect a couple of friends only, but if you are expecting large gathering, it will be appropriate to have bigger wooden tables with extensions. You should include patio umbrellas with eye-catching designs. You get these umbrellas made from wood or aluminum.

Deck for Parties

It’s nice idea to have an outdoor party with all your friends on the deck. You need to have seating arrangement, which maybe built in. It’ll be fun to have a party in the evening during winters and you can arrange for an outdoor fireplace to get the feel of a campfire. Else, you may employ a patio heater and make the deck comfortable. You may need an outdoor fan if the party is during the day or on a summer evening. Make sure to provide an outdoor bar, and possibly a barbecue on the deck for having a great time with friends. And don’t forget you need a deck railing too! You don’t want people falling down on your lawn or even your roses just because they had one too many. Building a nice, sturdy deck railing should keep those guests safe and will give your deck a complete look.

Deck for Kids

Kids always love to enjoy outdoors and deck makes an ideal setting for them. Perhaps, you could organize a painting competition for them in the natural surroundings of the deck or just let them alone with their toys. You need to have kids’ friendly furniture. There should be adequate space for storage of their toys. The kids will be thrilled if you could arrange for a weather-resistant LCD television or music system for their amusement. Another idea will be to give them daybeds and let them experience the pleasure of sleeping under a starlit sky.

Tips for Building Your Deck

Deck building is an easy home improvement project which you won’t find difficult to execute even if you lack good carpentry skills. You’ll find the following tips of help while installing your deck:

Tip #1: It’s important that you opt for a very simple design of the deck, especially if you are building it on your own. A complex design may become very frustrating for you and you may like to give up the entire project in the middle of everything.

Tip #2: Decks should always be made from pressure treated lumber. Though it’s more expensive, it lasts longer than cheaper untreated variety that hardly lasts for five years. You’ll realize that in the long run it proves economical to use the pressure treated variety.

Tip #3: When buying materials for making your deck, buy a few extra pieces and keep them aside. These will come handy if you fall short of some pieces or some pieces turn out to be defective.

Tip #4: The foundation should be so sloped as not to allow any accumulation of water and it gets drained away from the house. While setting up the lumber, you should keep its curved rings on the top to prevent water from remaining on the top and thus avoid rotting of wood.

Tip #5: Take care to see that the boards used for framing the deck are not rotten or split at the ends. These should be free from insect holes and mildew infestation.

The Best Sunburst Deck Railing Designs

The kind of design you opt to have for your deck railing, greatly affects the overall design of your deck. While standing on your deck and looking at the backyard or vice versa, you’ll find how strongly it adds to the appeal of the deck. You can add an element of interest to the design of your railing and to prevent it from looking boring, you could perhaps add some sunburst deck railing, also known as starburst deck railing.

If you come to think of it, the traditional 2×2 design of a deck railing, though practical, is quite lackluster. Having a sunburst deck railing design gives contemporary looks and feels good on the deck. Its cost is slightly more than the standard vertical 2×2 baluster railing, but that’s not very significant really. It will need the same 2×2 balusters, but the expense towards labor will be more as it requires a lot of time for cutting and installing the sunburst design. The material cost too could be slightly higher, depending on the design you choose to have.

You need not necessarily enclose the complete deck with a sunburst deck railing design. You may carry the design a bit too far, if you aren’t cautious. It can be so designed that each segment of sunburst railing pattern gets separated by a segment of standard vertical railing. Let the sunburst segments remain highlighted but they shouldn’t be dominating. Excessive use of sunburst causes distraction from the deck, rather than remaining pleasant to the eyes. Ideally, the width of individual segment of sunburst pattern should remain within four feet to six feet. But, you may have segments of eight to ten feet width between the posts. Don’t worry, that poses no problem at all. In such a case you may simply have verticals of 2×4, equally spaced from the posts, thus decrease the span to 6’ or even less. Then you can make use of standard vertical balusters of 2×2 between the posts and the 2×4’s. The room created between the 2×4’s can be filled up using the sunburst design.

You don’t really need to have a sunburst design between all the posts, though you may be tempted to do that. Primarily it depends upon the deck size, especially the extent to which you want to covet the sides with sunburst segments. Take care ,lest you should overdo it.

Can I Do This Myself?

If you can spare sometime, have the necessary tools and some sense of carpentry, you should be able to do the project on your own. Further, if you plan the entire project, things become a lot easier. As already pointed out ensure that the span for the sunburst segment remains less than six feet. You can start by drawing a plan first. Measure the distance between the deck posts. The job becomes easier if the distance is uniform all over. Otherwise, you have to choose sunburst segment that conforms to the distance between the deck posts. The process of installation that follows here, is based on the assumption that you know the installation of a typical 2×2 railing design, otherwise you have to learn that. Let’s suppose you have had spans of eight feet between 6×6 posts and you like to have 5’ segments of sunburst deck in the middle of some of these segments.

You begin with the installation of top and bottom parallel rails between two corresponding posts. These are required to secure the balusters. Then, you position two 2×4 vertical balusters within the posts, enabling you to cut the central span to 5’. Using a plumb, find the center and fix the first baluster. From the central baluster, work on either side by positioning the bottom of each baluster against the previous baluster, and spread out the tops, so that the gap at the top is not more than four inches. Keep doing the same way till you are not left with a space of more than four inches. Mind you, as you keep spreading out the size of baluster will keep increasing. The pre-cut balusters may not be sufficiently long for the longer pieces, and you may need to purchase a few 8 feet long stack pieces and cut them to size. Then you just fit the next top and bottom rail that covers the ends of the balusters, and you’re done.

For a tighter pattern at the base of the sunburst, you may cut each baluster on an angle to fit them together closely. You will need to cut the end of all balusters at an angle where they join the vertical post. The base and top of most of the balusters gets sandwiched between two 2×4 and won’t be visible.

When you like to have a tighter pattern at the base of the sunburst railing design, it would need a half round piece in the middle of the base for covering the angle cuts, which are likely to project beyond the top of the bottom 2×4 rail. So, after you have installed all balusters, cut a half round or elliptical shape of adequate size that would cover them. That you get a bit of additional flair. You may go for it even if there is no need to hide any cuts.

Sunburst deck railing is nice way of providing a touch of style to your deck. Apply it to renovate a basic railing system to a stunning looking piece. The project, whether you do it of your own or get it done from a professional, transforms your deck to become the main point of attraction of the backyard.
